Tracking your spending without a spreadsheet meltdown

Tracking your spending without a spreadsheet meltdown

You cannot fix what you cannot see, and most people genuinely have no idea where their money goes each month. Yet the classic advice — log every coffee in a detailed spreadsheet — collapses within a fortnight. The trick is to track in a way you will actually keep up.

Start with a single honest month

You do not need to track forever. One careful month is often enough to reveal the leaks — the forgotten subscriptions, the takeaways, the "small" spends that add up. Once you have seen the pattern, you can act on it without logging every penny for the rest of your life.

Pick the lightest method you will stick to

  • Banking app categories. Many banks now sort your spending into categories automatically. Almost zero effort, and usually enough to spot the big picture.
  • The three-number check. Each week, note just three figures: what came in, what went on essentials, what went on everything else.
  • A simple budgeting app. If you want more detail, an app that links to your accounts does the sorting for you.

Watch the categories, not the coffees

The goal is not guilt over individual purchases but awareness of categories. If eating out is quietly swallowing a few hundred pounds a month, that is the insight that changes behaviour — not whether one latte was justified.

Turn insight into action

Once you can see the leaks, redirect that money on purpose: into savings, debt, or a goal that matters more than the spending did. Tracking is only worthwhile if it changes something. Keep it light, look for the big patterns, and let the numbers do the persuading.
